About this deal

As with many of the great epics, it refuses to be pegged as one thing; instead, it is all these things, like the world is all these things. I’ve got to be fair and review it for what it is - an ‘epic western’, (and as I do quite often feel some of the classics I read lack enough story! As the cattle drive moves north through Texas, the Hat Creek company encounters dust storms, dangerous river crossings, and many other adventures.

When the sky had pinked up nicely over the western flats, Augustus went around to the back of the house and kicked the kitchen door a time or two. These days the internet allows us to fall in love with people we never met either, so times haven’t changed that much. This is without a doubt the best book I've read in years - a huge cast of characters that are all memorable in their own way, this book is just bursting with story and ideas. It looks worn, well thumbed, well read, pages and cover alike, beginning to curl up, and soiled by use.

He teaches us instead how to live each day with joy, taking pleasure in the smallest things, and loving the smallest things so much that they become life’s very meaning. Having held a selection of rather mundane jobs in my life and often feeling out of place (even if not so much as the main character), I easily wanted to follow the story to the end and see what happened. Flush with authenticity, Wall Street Journal --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.Reminds me a bit of Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden (my all time favourite novel) and definitely up there with those two Steinbeck classics in terms of quality - a truly great American novel! In Fort Smith, the young and inexperienced sheriff, July Johnson, reluctantly departs town on the trail of Jake Spoon, taking his 12-year-old stepson Joe with him, and leaving the inept deputy sheriff Roscoe Brown in charge. Before leaving in the spring, he puts Newt in charge of the ranch and gives him his horse, his rifle, and his family watch, but still cannot bring himself to publicly acknowledge the boy as his son.
